For the record, after closely monitoring the speed at which players were able to dig down in their mines I determined it to still be too fast. I have, thus, decreased the speed further and I believe after this final adjustment mine purity is finally at a place that I think will be good for expeditions.

By making black rock burn slower? That would make it most like the other purity grinds where there is a time factor that is super hard to Zerg past.

My guess is he made drop downs become even more increasingly rare. Does that sentence even make sense? What I mean is the chance of finding a drop down is calculated using a rational function, something like:
Code: Select all
1/level of mine^speed*starting difficulty

The starting difficulty is whatever you want the chance to be on level 1, the speed determines how quickly you want it to get difficult, so a starting difficulty of 5(%) and a speed of 2 would give you a drop down after mining (on average) 20 tiles of hard rock on level 1, 80 on level 2 and 980 on level 7 (total of 2800 to get to level 8). Where as JC has decided that is too easy so increases the speed so that it gets less common:
A speed of 3 and starting difficulty of 5 gives an average of mining 6860 tiles of hard rock on level 7, but you would need to have mined 8820 tile to have got there (15680 to get to level 8).

Or maybe the chance is tied to the number of mined tiles on a level / in the vicinity.

Are you saying it is best to mine out a massive area leaving a few hard tiles and then do them last? Instead of working at the face of the hard rock.

I am saying "maybe" with some hope for clarification from developers.
