Thats it, you could abuse metal chests to wall off braziers as chests do not take nor produce splash, and they can take quite a beating, not that "cheap" as chest and lock cost metal, but just pig iron, and well, that actually is very, very easy to make in large quantities, doable by pretty much everyone.
Therefore metal chests are always liftable, or in other words, we would need a better solution here, there are acutally 2 that come to my mind.
1. metal chests can't be placed near braziers/TPs
2. metal chests can be walked through like leantos

I guess the devs just did not think of it as a problem, as it would be very easy to fix it.

Then simply change chest cost to something like 8 steel. If somebody manages to layer up with such cost per tile, I guess they deserve to have it.

I do not agree. You might as well say people should be able to build a wall out of silver coins that costs 15k per tile that is nearly indestructible

imo defenses should be cheap and there should be a clear line between defensive structures and secure-storage structures
