Inbreeding?

Postby Zapt13 » Sat Mar 07, 2015 2:28 pm

Looking forward to Animal Husbandry, but while discussing it with my wife she had an interesting question: Can the animals become in-bred and suffer from undesireable mutations? Hilarious discussions about 5-legged horses followed.

In my opinion, turkeys should also have this potential, making it important to bring in a new Gobbler once in a while.

Any other thoughts?

Sounds cool, but we'd need to be able to tag animals for easier tracking of bloodlines. We could use a branding iron on livestock and copper rings on turkeys.

Branding would also likely be a good way to add a 'claim' on an animal so that it is easy to know when a crime has been commited (scent left) when it has been stolen. While a sheep or a cow would normally be on ones homestead a horse used to travel would not and thus be more open to theft.

Adding bloodlines and negative effects to breeding would also increase the need to trading between players - an easy feat with turkeys but something which is much harder with the larger animals. Such trades would forge relations while also provide the perfect enviroment for backstabing, theft and all sorts of fun things.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

We'll travel around the globe, my FurFur and I.
We'll hunt bears and beavers, killing them at first try.
We'll fly across the skies, my Furfur and I.
We'll see mountains lakes, never to say goodbye.
My FurFur and I, my FurFur and I, never to cry.
