Lookin' for town - New to Salem

Postby stevewince » Sun Dec 07, 2014 10:36 am

Hello! My in game name is Lynchs.
I just came to salem about 3 days ago, And I fell in love instantly. I love the style, and the character building.
I have came a decent way in the past 3 days i believe. I have mostly been focusing on gaining as many skills as I can and working toward the rights of the englishman skill.
Besides that, I have been crafting clothing and trying to level that aswell as farming, But I have had less luck in that, due to the fact that I have no Idea what i'm doing half the time.
I have been reading the wikis and forums the past couple of days, and it has totally helped me come a long way, But there is only so much you can learn from that. I'm more of a hands on learner myself, so I came here in search of a group or even one other person looking to mentor a new person.
This game is totally has one of the steepest learning curves I have ever seen, But that's what I love about it. It keeps me thinking.
Anyway, If anyone sees this, I hope you consider replying, Because I could use all the help I could get. I'm not looking for handouts, I will grind for my own gear, I just need guidance and to borrow some wisdom.

I appreciate your time.
- Lynchs

I'd gladly help you out with questions, but as there is no trust in the world of Salem - just with questions = )

I know JC thinks the trial membership thing was enough to settle the problem of alt saboteurs but at least personally I would never trust someone to join my town I didn't know before. In haven town security was achieved by one way crossroads. You could teleport out with crossroads and in only with town port or hearthport. It worked. Gates were only ever opened by gate alts owned by town leaders for things like letting wagons in and out. Maybe gates should not actually open just allow people with permission to pass. And no a month is not enough to weed out potential saboteurs. The big problem is the whole giving permisions to people you're partied with. What's the reason for that?

You can extend a Trial Membership longer than a month.

A trial membership is WAY more than what is needed to successfully recruit people to a town. Several towns use it just fine and with large success. I do agree that the tool itself requires a level of sophistication that is beyond the 'average' mayor to use correctly, and thus running a town that can take players with open arms, and eliminate spy risks, is outside the means of the 'average' town. But because the 'average' player cannot achieve something, doesn't immediately make it a 'problem' to me.

Thing is most noob towns you know the ones that new players end up in are exactly that, average or even below that. And maybe you like catering only to endgame players (most of these on the spot events you make are only for endgame players good or bad it's what it is) but if you want the game to grow you need to retain the noobs and yes I know game is not final not interested in advertising etc but people who find the game now on their own without any advertising I suspect have a higher potential retention rate since they are actively seeking this kind of game so they shouldn't be discouraged. And playing with other people is one of the big factors in retention for mmos. Maybe people just need to get their act together as a comunity and form noob town and the veterans agree to leave it be like "Brodgar" in Haven. I think the tribe sort of worked as a way to protect noobs even though it drove many of them away by the very idea but since then there's nothing. This game needs a Yolan or a theTrav some larpers with a big dream and enough charisma and innocence in their eyes to get the other to leave the noob town alone maybe even fund it a bit.

I agree that the 'problem' lays squarely in the lack of players in the community with the charisma/dream to build the 'community' they want in this sandbox. The tools are there. Any further involvement for us is simply to 'force' social aspects to the game is just us trying to mitigate that the community itself has chosen not to build these things with the tools already available to them. Thus undermining the idea of the sandbox to begin with.
