Patch Size & Speed

Forum for suggesting changes to Salem.

Should Mortal Moments Release Quicker Smaller Patches or Slower Bigger Patches

I would like to see patches every 10 days. Even if they are smaller in scale.

I think it is better to keep to the approx 30 Day Schedule and don't mind waiting for more complete updates.

Patch Size & Speed

Postby JohnCarver » Wed Nov 05, 2014 6:00 am

Salemites,
With a lot of major system overhauls like Animations done we would be capable of updating the game, and resource serving server faster and more frequently. However, this obviously means smaller and less complete updates.

I think the questions speak for themselves. I'm curious on the opinion of the community on the subject.

Personally, I DNOT LIEK UR super big updates, because of my translations for ru-community. I like to spent some time once a week for smaller texts, than spending a plenty of time, translating your huge walls of text once o month.
As a player, I prefer smaller patches too. It's so much fun for me to be excited about approaching patch, so more patches -> more fun.

Skeptical about the times between partial implemented features, like if you add a Darkness monster that drop nothing and then one week later "oh btw now they drop stuff"
Casted 10 days option anyway ¦]
You thought I quit.

It would be nice if we could somehow do more languages for Salem(So that you can choose which language to use in the game), not sure how that would work though.

I voted for smaller patches, not because I necessarily need to see a patch every 10 days (actually I like 30 days over the 10 when it comes down to numbers), but because I believe the whole waiting until an update is complete is a dangerous concept. You're know as well as any of us, better than most, how it used to be. Waiting for an idea or patch to be complete almost became a mantra to justify nothing happening. It's better to keep the ball rolling, even if it's not perfect.

I voted for 30 days, cause from my own experience - updating the server itself takes efforts and day of update (or two days?) are just wasted for this work. Updating too often slows down the progress of development, unless you have special person for this stuff. Also, as someone noted before me, i prefer complete updates with more complex stuff, then just simple one-two new items, and i highly doubt it will be possible to implement new system or mechanic in 10 days. While i love to see all this new stuff, i believe i will see more of it if we keep 30 days.

Actually what i would suggest and (IMO) is the best option - to finish Roadmap (with Darkness repopulation and domesticated animals and all the stuff planned) and when this is done - all the major rework and updates - you can switch to faster and smaller updates while working on large new features in background.

i would prefer a large patch every 3 months or so, annoying to have a bunch of new **** to catch up on and then having another shovel full before your half done with the first.

I also prefer 30-day patches (not much longer, because of the valid point pistolshrimp raises that waiting on "completeness" of patches is pointless) because most of the things you guys are currently working on feel like larger systems that can hardly be "finished" in a week/10 days.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Yeah, 30 day patches are fine. Any longer and we might be left wanting for more content, and any less and we might get stuff like normal-boned wishpooshes. Which are cool on their own, but it'd be nice to at least see every separate thing be complete on its own if not as a mini-system.

Apart from the stuff already mentioned there are some more points:
1. The game (especially hardcore PvP) needs some stability, and too many patches too often do not give the feeling of it. Some people may decide to wait until game stabilizes - not many people like rules changing all the time.
2. People may quickly get used to the constant influx of content and when the game is released (and updates stop) they may get bored quickly if they don't get their fix of changes
3. less and bigger patches = more time for warnings, less patch notes to read. Not everyone visits the forum everyday to read every thread and post made by developers
