Masonic Icons

Postby KhaiMann » Sun Oct 14, 2012 9:22 pm

I started playing the game today after waiting a few months to get my hands on a Beta Key.

One of the first things that grabbed my attention was the masonic icons, especially the learning icon (Eye of Providence). For some reason many browser games have decided that using such icons is cool or relevant for some unknown reason(Lord of Ultima).

Come on guys, can't we be just a little more original? For one, I really don't like to feel like I'm being indoctrinated when playing a game. couldn't we have a neutral icon with no hidden symbolism? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Khai

Uh, are you actually familiar with the history of the American colonies? Are you aware that the Eye of Providence is on the dollar bill? Those are the icons for a reason, and it isn't because someone decided it would be the hipster thing to do.

Yes, I know what the symbolism stands for and yes I am very familiar with American History. I did learn something when doing my English (American) Lit. and Cultural studies degree.

I just find it strange that so many games will resort to these icons when they have nothing to do with their supposed meanings. I can understand the Masonic Square and Compasses since they represent the tools used by stone masons to build and construct things. But what does the All seeing Eye have to do with learning? Why use it in a game about pilgrims?

Since most pilgrims were puritans escaping religious prosecution in Europe, shouldn't the icon be a Bible since that is one of the few books they read? Learning in those times was strictly tied to Christian doctrine.

"Education was primarily the responsibility of families, but numerous religious groups, especially the Puritans in New England, established tax-supported elementary schools so their children could read the Bible. "

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, I'm just asking this for the sake of curiosity.

It's not that. I'm just curious of why they always use these specific icons since they aren't really relevant.

Maybe I find it interesting since I know the meaning of such symbols. People who don't might find it strange that I even asked. Like I said before, I'm just curious.

What's not relevant? The Masons were involved in everything during that time period. It was a "boys club" by that point in history and as often as not had nothing to do with actual masonry.
