living in darkness gives more "natural" protection in form of raiders having to avoid such animals and deal with the drain. since the animal cant go through your brick wall, you are protected against that animal
as for reward for actually killing it: it is enough that it is a vanity one, thats how they do in gw2 and it is highly successful
what devs should avoid is to make it so that once you reach 300+ biles, you are forced to rebuild a base in darkness or you will be at a far too massive disadvantage
why? because that would lead to a massive amount of area in the world being abandoned, which is a waste of resources

maybe an idea is to allow people to build the opposite of churches to create darkness where they live
