Possible replacement for boston.

Postby Feone » Wed Oct 08, 2014 9:20 pm

I'm putting this in a seperate topic because, while related, it's not entirely on the map size fix topic.

I suggest replacing boston entirely with a player-made system. A capital for an area would be an accurate description. This town would be built by players, wherever players want it, like any other.
A capital would be a safezone, to some degree (Detail below.) to be able to function as a marketplace hub for traders and travellers alike. Anyone may trespass and open containers on this type of town, but only the owners may build or destroy. Crimes may not be committed on its territory unless certain requirements are met (details below.) . While intact a capital town would essentially be a player-constructed boston, possibly one of many. To avoid alt-vaulting it would be impossible to log out within a capital.
The current teleport fast-travel options would probably have to point to either a capital of choice or the nearest one.

Stalls would also be buildable in a town like this.

In order for a town to be a capital it must be supported by several other towns within the local area. The size of the capital would be limitted by the authority of the towns endorsing it. The invulnerability of the capital would work in the same way. As long as there is enough authority supporting its size the capital would remain a safezone. Should this authority be reduced however it would fall back into being a normal town that can be attacked by a waste claim. Reducing the authority of a capital can only happen if one or more of the towns supporting it no longer do so. Either through political disagreements or through being destroyed/conquered.

The function of a town like this would strictly be to act as a social hub, in place of boston. Something for groups of players within a local area to build up together, it'd encourage cooperation and social interaction and it would solve the map size issue by allowing teleportable (or fast-travelled by other means) locations at any place players are willing to build one.

What is wrong with providence?
I think removing providence would be a terrible idea tbh, there should be a town with NPCs and events and stalls and such that is not player controlled.
Just add a carriage house which would lets say have a radius of 10 tiles from which you can teleport to the current town, providence.

We have no immediate desire or intention to remove providence.

I like the general goal , this is basically what we saw in H&H in a town called 'Sodom' which was intentionally placed at the center of the world and which was policed by and protected by the super-powers of that game.

But rather then making this a special KIND of town, make all the effects your describing specific to a ZONE within a town, call it the 'Market Zone' or something. It exists in a specified block area around some specific structure/s. This means the host town can still enjoy the normal town protections in the areas outside the market zone. I wouldn't necessarily block all crimes, I think just relaxing the Theft protection can be suspended so folks can look into containers, pick things up off the ground etc.

In this system there would be a point where only one point of authority would be the difference between Capital Safezone and town, what would prevent a towns from creating a capital gathering enough people there and then just dropping it a single point and slaughtering everyone? This becomes and issues especially when people are buying cash shop items in the capital as there is no more Providence.
