JC, what about "fair" automatisation for some actions? I'm talking about functions like Ender's "Transfer all items like", or some kind of macro engine, allowing to record a short sequence of actions? Popular MMO's, like Lineage 2 or World of Warcraft, have macro engines in their clients, despite the fact they are fighting bots badly.

There is either a human behind the computer, or there is not.

If you leave your computer to get a drink from your fridge, while leaving your macro/bot/automation running we reserve the right to ban you.

Be behind your computer when you are playing and you should be fine.

I tend to play without the sound and with closed chat. When I gather grass It may look like I'm botting.

Also, would it be fine if a person had a bot running in the background while doing something else on the PC and checking up from time to time?

There is no clear way to distinguish between a player and a bot, from server's side.

Following this logic, "if you watch your bot - everything will be fine". I think that's not the thing you've actually meant.

Let's imagine if someone has implemented shift-walking engine. It allows you to shift-click some points on the ground to make a route, which your character will follow, point after point. If you're carrying something, this may took a fair long time, so you can get a drink from the fridge, alt-tab to read the forums and even go take a poop. How do you determine whether it is legal or not? What will you do before you ban anyone?

P.S.: shift-clicking path building is popular in games, where you're controlling unit from "top-view" camera. It's also implemented in some H&H clients.

Nice fairy tale. In that situation though, you would bump into our invisible spectator. You would then notice us appear, sound or not, and respond to communication. In the event you were running a bot, you would either magically stall out, or make methodical evasive action to the injected conditions. At which point, the bot is banned. There are plenty of other pretty easy and pretty simple ways to detect bots with 99% efficiency. The most sophisticated bots we have seen in Salem are really not that sophisticated at all. We will make sweeping announcements when and if its actually a problem. For now though, its simply not.
