These kinds of things are always unfortunate. Here you wanted to help little Timmy, whom you thought was a newbie, start his life in Salem. Instead, Tim ends up helping to kill you. I think it's best to see these events as a learning experience and move on. For some people moving on means finding a game more to their liking. For others moving on might involve going to a new area and trying to build a new settlement.

Speaking for myself, I do sometimes wonder how the developers envision a forum like "Planters and Pilgrims" should work. Has there ever been a settlement that started on "Planters and Pilgrims" that ended up successful? Is the purpose of "Planters and Pilgrims" to help new players find a group and settle together? Or is "Planters and Pilgrims" meant to be more of a tool for experienced players to find and rob/kill new players?

I reckon some players who post here looking for groups end up being adopted by towns.
Also some recruitment posts have not ended in disaster (yet).

Starting as a group of strangers together is pretty much doomed though. At the very least you need walls and basic security to start any recruiting at all. Either that or a healthy dose of luck and maybe 2-4 people max.
Then again, nothing much to lose as a starter so perhaps you'll find some people to stick with.

The only successful towns ever created from here was by everyone darwoth murdered at his. Will be hard to do this until murder is easier to avenge.

Nice to see town recruitment is a fluid thing.

Indeed, but the fluid involved seems to be pure Tears. ¦]

I'd been wondering how long it would be before JCs boast here, (which I interpreted as a mild push back against my own thread highlighting this issue) that recruiting is 'fine' would fall on it's face. It's abundantly clear that opening a town to application via a thread like this is a death-trap, the only methods that have shown any success are inviting the 'looking for town' posters (of which their might be 2-3 a week total) or bringing in your IRL friends.

I think towns/groups started in this manor need to have at least the chance to fail internally (which will likely be >90%) rather then to be snuffed out by infiltrator induced murder in a week.

I think this is one of the hardest things about Salem when it comes to keeping the game alive with new blood. Perhaps part of the solution will lie with the new "Shipwreck Island" on the developer road map. If new folks have enough time in a safe environment to develop some bonds with other people, it's possible that two or three (or more) might move off of Shipwreck Island and start a settlement in Providence together. Yes, the settlement will likely fail, but I think it would be less likely to fail through internal treachery.

You may be right. I'm not very active in the forums (as you and see from my post count), so it's possible that only the Tragic End town threads stick in my mind.

That's my sense as well. Perhaps a stickied disclaimer at the top of Planters and Pilgrims would be in order? "Trying to start a town using the town starter forum usually ends in gruesome death." I know such a warning is not in the spirit of Salem, but the Planters and Pilgrims forum is often used by new folks, just like the Help forum is often used by new folks. Is giving them a heads up justified?

Thanks for your comments and suggestions to save everyones eyes though I belive we should end this discussion.

True that planters and pilgrims seems to be more of a laugh than a real thread I tried solemnly to adopt a few friends from it, Alas it would seem we were followed and pillaged for giggles.

For information's sake, Those few people I did meet by using the thread have stuck with me and we are all currently enjoying the experience this setback has given us, both in starting again and in conversation.

The heads up to new users would actually vie a thank you from most I think.

One last note before you see me randomly popping up somewhere else, I like very much the idea that a new group should be left to fall apart from the inside, this would seem more reasonable from the more aged experienced players, I honestly don't know what he managed to get from that.

Still as stated before this is a brutal game and we all have to accept that there are those out there in the woods waiting for someone to come along just like us set up a base and get slapped with a wet trout freshly caught from the river of bile.

Grats again GRIMM I shall find you one day and Keel you for your crimes against my folk. (and me)
He waits... that's what he does...

As stated by the OP he has more village mates still with him than he had before making this thread. Failure to use keys and trial member mechanics is not a failure in the system. Just a failure to use said systems to their true potential and the consequences from this are fine in my opinion.

OP admits that he let an annoying and slightly obvious troll into his town and home. Salem will never have a mechanoc to prevent deaths in this manner.
