Does the purity of items put into the Compost bin matter at all? Or is it only the building materials and worms that matter?

Only the purity of the worms & the purity of the bin. The worms matter most, by far.

Note that this may change with the coming patch.

Also ive tried to read up on purity, but as far as i can tell its an eternal circle of. I need high purity humus to get high purity plants, i need high purity plants to get high purity worms, i need high purity worms to get high purity Humus.

How do i get into this circle if i have neither?

You know, not all plants are grown in your fields.
And do remember your compost bins still do need to be pure, otherwise your worms are useless.

Feed your earthworm pythons high purity forgeable plants you find (hunting and gathering caps this number) by placing them in a crate next to the worm. Also be sure to pay attention to the alchemical properties of the plant and not just the purity %. Ideally you want 1 property to be high and the rest low vs having 2 high and 2 low.

From http://www.salem-wiki.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Worm
"Worms can have their purity adjusted by feeding them plants with the purity you want them to eventually obtain. You must place the worm in a container and then place an item of the Any Plant category immediately next to the worm. After approx 12 hours the worm will consume that plant and the worm's alchemy levels will make a 10% adjustment towards the plant's alchemy. For example if the plant had 40 salt value and the worm had 30 salt value, once the worm feeds on the plant it will gain 10% of the difference which is 1 and end up having 31 salt value."

On top of that having purity gardening pots from high quality lime, granite & clay (or water, since that can be turned into almost equal purity clay) can also help you grow better trees, gradually.

Ideally you want to use alchemy to boost the purity of your items every step of the way.

But without an ability to custom generate lime and granit, how do you ever get above the foragable Purity?

You don't really.
I don't think it's possible to get crop & tree purity very far above 10%. That is still enough to double their stats though.

The best you can do is find the best foragable lime, granite, water & berries (or buy them) and then buy a few high pieces of humus. Plant a few berry bushes as high purity as possible and use their daily harvest to raise your worms.

However, I'd wait with all this untill after the patch, it may very well be completely different than it is now.
