While we appreciate the concern and demand for previous population tracking. We felt it was a failed representation of how many people you could interact with in the game. You should very much be able to interact with other players in the game that have simply left a hide drying, or a leanto to destroy etc. I felt it was far more misleading as it was, than as it is. A newer player, fresh to Salem, should understand how many other users have left some physical presence in the word this day/week/month and set their population expectations off of this figure.

You can of course just check town to get a good idea of how many people are playing as I'm sure a decent % will be hanging around there. Keep in mind these numbers do not count separate characters on the same account. So cycling through large lists of alts on a separate account has little bearing on the data.

I don't know where people get this idea, but that's not true.

whelp, maybe thats how you intended it to work but you are simply wrong.

as i said, i have tried several times to pad/manipulate the server pop numbers with large numbers of simultaneously logged in accounts (with characters in game) and there was no deviation in the server population for approximately 15 - 20 minutes each time, unless the status was updating slower than that, which i doubt. than i am correct.

I can't say I know what you did wrong and/or how you misinterpreted in the data, but I can with perfect certainty guarantee you that the status page used to show the number of simultaneously logged in accounts, and that it was updated in real-time. There is simply no way for it to have displayed anything else. :)

Just for the record, while there certainly are many players that use multiple accounts, the vast majority of IP addresses (which are, of course, also to be noted to be an imprecise metric given dynamic IPs, NAT routers, proxies and whatnot) I observe only log in on a single account each day. I know this may be hard to buy for some of you, but it is actually the case. :)

This is of course an inexact number, but it is my experience over time that the number of accounts logged in on a given day might be inflated by some 20% or so when compared with the number of unique IP addresses on that same day.

Thanks for the info loftar. I have no reason to doubt you on this. Whatever the current numbers, I am expecting them to grow based on the focus of the dev roadmap and the ability of the new team (with consultation by you and jorb) to get the job done.

Would it be possible to track some other random stuff currently?

For example,
Amount of <animal> killed daily.
Amount of players killed daily.
Amount of fields harvested, boulders dug up, etc etc.

Random statistics on what the population is doing basically.

There are many things we can track.

For example, last month the most spiders killed and turned into the kings stall was 2,147 by a single player. We are trying to be careful on just how we implement leader boards though as there is a fair bit of pride in just how anonymous you can be in Salem and we wouldn't want for players wishing to remain so to all of a sudden be a target based on information other players shouldn't otherwise have.

The server killed and turned in closer to 18,000. So yes this single player killed 10% of all spiders that month.
