I'm not sure lying about the developers killing your character is the wisest strategy at this point.

Even walking back your lie and trying to turn it into a dramatic exaggeration about him being as good as dead is pretty weak.

There are two practical uses for a hat:
-Artifices
-Aesthetics

You've said your character is a merchant, by which I infer you don't use him for labor and have no intention of using him as a fighter. The loss of the artifice slots provided by a hat, if this is the case, is of no effect.

The aesthetic aspect doesn't hold up either. While the hat may make you look silly, it will not harm your role as a merchant. If anything, it strengthens it, as it makes it much harder for someone to impersonate you.

I understand you're upset and feeling a bit whiny. I don't think giving you the dunce cap was a good move by the developers, and was unprofessional. But your handling of the situation has only served to make you look the fool. You've thrown a hissy-fit, accused everyone around you of racism(?!), and are now fabricating wholesale lies. If you had instead kept a level head and been a bit more polite and reasonable, you probably could've talked your way out of that dunce cap.
