If this kind of game requires constant stream of updates to keep people interested then there's something wrong with it much deeper.
It's not a theme park MMO.

Lack of progress in character development (we must farm, cook, eat, wait, farm... but that doesn't lead us to any better PvE or to PvP, doesn't unlock better skills, building, nothing),
lack of progress in town development (put walls, put braziers, keep upkeep high),
make lots of oiled boards - and that is it entire late game,
ohh wait there is purity, but it is so slow I forgot about it.

Things that are not fun (for me):
No PvP,
little PvE,
trust based communities (if I can't invite new people and teach them how to play, how we should make towns work?),
no mechanics for trading between people from different time zones,
no updates.

EDIT: I logged in... first time in this week... and talking about gays on forum was more fun than doing anything in game... good night.

Well there's no endgame whatsoever. PvP could fill that role if it was well balanced and fun for all involved parties, but that's a really tall order.

It's not that it requires constant updates. It's that it's very much incomplete. Think back to the time about a year and 6 months ago when the game went into 'open beta' and ask yourself how much had been ADDED since then. Not just changed or reworked, but actual new content. There has been very little.

I can think of forestry, alchemy, canoes, a few inspirationals, clothings, one wild animal, churches, and a couple other smallish miscellanea. We're still missing Animal Husbandry and Witchcraft, two major things that would add a lot to the game, especially if Witchcraft is planned to be an endgame thing. There are supposed to be horses and at least two more lumberwoods creatures. Most seem to think pvp could use some additions. The way farming works, there's room for 3 more crops in our 4 bar system. Alchemy is half-assed and needs additions. There's just so much that is supposed to be in this game and isn't.

When I started playing Salem I hadn't watched any trailers. I didn't know exactly what should or shouldn't be in the game. I had fun for couple of months. After recent update I was having fun as well. While more content would surely bring more things to do and more quality it still wouldn't change much. You would still reach the point when there's not much to do, only repeatable stuff. When you have all skills, access to all resources and game mechanics. It's the same in Haven. Even with witchcraft, even with husbandry, we would be in the same situation, only a month later.

I think what most people lack is the goal, not content.

Some people play because they like progression, but get bored when they have everything.
Some people play to rule but they get bored when there are no enemies or the enemies are so strong that amount of work needed is no longer fun.
Some people play farmville style, but they get bored after some time or just get destroyed.
Some people play just to grief or make forum ***** and... well, they don't get bored here.

Realized i had to move my lean to cause we were downsizing our village and half our people had quit, glanced at my crime debuff, "14 days left". Gave up. Bring on haven 2 cause logging in every 12 hours to feast got old real quick.

Exactly and yet everything about this game caters to those people. It's not fun in the least.

New Salem sucks like new Coke sucked. Logging in once a day, blowing my gluttony and inspiration timers in under an hour, then logging off because there isn't **** to do.... Nobody in Boston talks anymore, pvp is going to be something nobody wants to instigate due to gluttony being so slow that loosing a toon sets you back so far, but hey, at least we got spiders that aren't even worth the bother of fighting...

we endured a wipe for what equated to no reason whatsoever, and most of us did so without ***** about it since the promise of new content was right around the corner. Yet here we are, no animals, no witchcraft, no point to logging in. I'm patiently awaiting content still, even though I'm pretty sure when it does get here, it will be useless and just be another disappointment.

now, if you'll excuse me, my Tamagochi needs petted and fed
