By your definition any time my 26 fanboy friend kills a 12 y/o in halo he is griefing (rather than just killing kids in a lame game). After all, that 12 y/o is probably raging about getting killed. Unless my friend goes out of his way to target said 12 y/o for the sole purpose of upsetting him, it's not griefing.

Wait...so the carebare is the person who says misusing game mechanics is griefing? But you, who insists that all raiders are griefers, aren't a carebear?

Without profit or at a loss are irrelevant to whether someone or not is a griefer. The question of relevance is: does he cause grief?

Halo is a FPS where I don't think anyone would feel grief over getting killed. Which leads to the next question: is it "bad" to be a griefer? Also, feeling rage is not the same thing as feeling grief.

And this is a permadeath building/crafting MMO? Destroying stuff is merely part of the game, just as killing 12 y/o is a part of halo (still a lame game).

Targeting clear noobs might classify as griefing since there's generally no profit in doing so.

I disagree with the idea that one needs to be misusing game mechanics to be a griefer though. It is often the case that griefers misuse game mechanics, but it's not necessary. Take minecraft for instance - running around someone's base and destroying everything in sight isn't a misuse of game mechanics - but it is (well...can be - depends on the server somewhat) griefing. The game mechanics in MC are quite clearly geared towards being able and even encouraging destroying stuff. But doing so for the sole purpose of pissing everyone off is still griefing. It's funny...I swear I've had this exact same argument with people in minecraft who complained about being "griefed" after someone stole some stuff or destroyed a few blocks.

Killing noobs is also a part of the game, which is why I don't think there is anything inheretely wrong with griefing in this game. Yet, as long as people feel grief, which I have seen a lot of times, the action caused grief and was thus griefing.

Can't this discussion about griefing be separated into a different thread?
It honestly seems off topic to me..

Of course you can skip some question, nobody is going to force you to answer.

You just confirmed me in a conclusion that all you do is kill people who don't even know how to fight.
Hopefully you already learned how to build a gate properly.

im so grateful you didn't post your genitals
can you make sword in box light sword so sword come out when opened? then if sword is back after sword, use light saber on box, and saber will be boxed after sword is out. - Battlebug (Sw:tor forums pre-wipe)

It is very much on-topic since so many seem to dislike his actions when they aren't much better themselves. In fact, Chief's adventures are superb roleplaying entertainment.

there hardly is a point in trying to make a definition of "griefer" in an open pvp game.

Griefing requires intent to grief. Just because a carebear complains about how someone broke his basket doesn't mean he/she was griefed.

And I have no problem with griefing most of the time (it can go to far sometimes of course).

Anyway, this is off-topic and going in circles so there's not much point in continuing. (I was actually going to suggest the same thing Super)

im so grateful you didn't post your genitals

That would have made my day...

Chief is more of a forum troll than a griefer imo. He's killing only noobs who are still within a few days of starting and has yet to cause any damage to a player's property. If he's a griefer, he's a lame one.

Just because the Chief does/doesn't grief doesn't mean the topic should suddenly change to "what is griefing?" he probably also raises his humours a lot but I don't see the topic changing to "how do you raise humours?"

People are free to like/dislike his actions but maybe this talk could be merged with his scalping thread, or "the chief is dead" thread.

So if you do an action that you are almost certain will have a high probably of causing grief, you did not have the intent to cause grief? Heeey, don't charge me with 1st degree murder just because I open fire at a crowd, I just wanted to use my machine gun in a populated place among lots of people, I did not have an intent of actually killing anyone. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

Yeah, that is a moderator call, I suppose. It may be more suitable in other threads.
