Noob question, are points just credit for future buys at 1:1 with silver?

The point system is a trade system, let's say you have 0 silver but you would like to buy a woo-woo wand which is 50 points.
So to be able to buy this woo woo wand you need to trade him items whit a total worth of 50 points

example: 5 timblewiids (10p*5) for 1 woo woo wand (50p)
