Unless they changed some mechanics to make it harder for raiders to freely raze and steal, and easier for people to defend their homesteads (like, applying castle doctrine and being able to defend their home without leaving scents) it will always end there.
Well I think the problem lies in the lack of cammraderie. Obviously one person should not be able to build defences to withstand a 20 people attack and I think that is reflected in the game. The problem arises in the fact that other than the people that just kill for fun, no one else bands to work together. The division tends to run along the hardcore casual players spectrum, where the latter group has literally no chance of surviving in the game.
And, you know, in a very natural selection kind of way it makes perfect sense. Casual players are less productive than their hardcore counterparts, put less time and effort. As such, they are seen as inefficient by the hardcore players and they don't want to share their work production with them. Slowly, just as in nature, the hardcore players are the only who remain, since they are the only ones who can form a group and work together, the rest are pruned away and they have no chance of making it on their own.
