The Arcadian Showcase

Well, as all of you know by now there's a wipe incoming in not-so-much time. Rem and I have playing on Roanoke in Arcadia for so long now with so many people that we figure it deserves a farewell post.

I'll start off with an overview picture of small-arcadia (being only living quarters). It's linked here because it's a very big image (roughly 3 MB).
Some points of interest:
  • a graveyard just east of the church for ex-townies and neighbours
  • the newly flattened area to the east of the picture, which was to house new living quarters, a future animal farm, western docks and many other vast plans.
  • the few lonely maples lake-side. Original living quarters of Rem Herself.
  • a large collection of windmills and townhouses (care to count them for us?)
  • 14 different living quarters which were all occupied at a given point in time.
  • a lake-side dock with paved location tool.

And then for some
History

The original founders of Arcadia were RainbowCloud, Remy and myself. Rai and Rem were previous hermits while I had lived in the Hive (later Mirkwood) for a couple of months by then and had just moved out after the mayor quit denying us access to the bell. We met in a town chat which Crazyfool1 (also from the Hive) let us join, to connect a couple of hermits so wouldn't all feel so lonely.

After a while, I spawned Latikai at Rem's claim (the later location of Arcadia) where Rai was already living. We saved up a bit and quickly planted our bell. From there on our recruiting was of rather high-volume, but in some cases short-lived with most recruits eventually quitting. Slat and Angelic (and their son Spectre) lived a short distance away (the current southern border of Arcadia) and were pressed into joining us. They didn't regret it in the end.

Goal

Our goal for Arcadia was simple:build a gigantic aesthetically pleasing town that lives following logic and diplomacy. We wanted to offer people a safe haven where they could live in peace. We had but one rule: if people come looking for you with evidence, we'll murder you ourselves. This worked pretty well and we haven't had to do that once (although there were a couple of bad apples which needed culling). Overall, we stayed on the good side of the large factions and we didn't get drawn into any big conflicts, so I'd say we succeeded in our goal.

Showcase
Here are some screenshots of just some of the areas.

Map: Our long term plans were to almost double the town size, expanding to the riverside and upgrading the town over the years to come.

Eldest screenshot on record, even back in the days of my newbieness I had always planned long term and to build a large city.

The road plan: The roads were designed to be spacious. 4 tiles wide with either 2 or 3 tiles each side between walls, allowing for the closest tile to walls to be planted with pretty trees, the next tile planned for braziers and the roads with 3 tiles had the extra space for pretties such as benches and sunflowers.

The future high street, we had planned to add various little quirky buildings here such as a florist, hat shop and gay bar for Sipo and his lover william.

Long term we planned to fill the borders around the town with pixel art, here is the start:

Thanks
After some discussion with the rest of the people still in Arcadia, we have decided to publicize the list of (former) town members. A big thank-you to you all for joining us and for making Arcadia what it ended up to be! While the inevitable bad apples did show up and needed some, hmm, education to set them straight I can say that we proved such a large town with such a large number of people IS possible. It's exhausting to organize but once it's set up and people start helping each other where they can, things start to go smoother. Salem is a game that rewards community like no other, and I have experienced this in our town.

Members in rough chronological order of joining (strike-throughs were culled because of crimes against Arcadia):

That's rem - an asexual godly being. Half-russian, half-boy/girl. All awesomeness.

I thought Rem was British and Rainbow was the Russian? :D

I had no idea Rainbow joined that early. I thought the town was mostly up when you guys vultured Crazy's place.

By my count, You guys had over 20 active players at the end. Is that right? At least 4 of them lived at Timbertrails I think too, right? I'm glad they found a home there.

That place is truly amazing, impressive, well that's really awesome. I'm curious to know if there are some greater cities cause this one is by really far the most beautiful and large city I've ever seen in Salem.
