What he said?

I get you, jorb. I live in one of those countries and I'm tired of it. I wish we'd go back to our policy of Isolationism, but the genie is out of the bottle (nuclear weapons primarily, and it's going to be a long time before we can get out from under the cloud of Mutually Assured Destruction, even if we can never completely go back to that policy.

Hopefully we can discover the means for reasonable interstellar travel soon and go back to a stance of colonization and expansion. It would help relieve some of the stresses we have here (by creating different ones, of course). Then again, that pressure of "our only hospitable planet" disappears and what stops the nukes from flying at each other then if escape from the fallout can be assured?

Don't hold your breath for space travel... That's all science fiction. We'd much sooner become extinct on this planet than invent the neccesary technology (if it's even possible)...

Oh and Brego.. What revolution are you talking about? All I get from searching Google for this is that it's some kind of series of demonstrations, albeit serious. Anyway this thing will blow over soon enough.

Qatar and Turkey don't make for international community. If USA was arming the rebels you'd see a difference (they'd be driving around in Abrams tanks).

Or this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_in ... ted_States

Kudos.

There's no need for interstellar travel though. Space elevators are viable with existing technology, just on the moon or mars instead of on earth. Supermassive space habitats could be built if the will existed.

First, I doubt you're qualified to speak on this matter. Point: people swore up and down we couldn't break the sound barrier, either. Yet it got broken in the late 1940s with a specially designed rocket. Sailors have sworn up and down that there's an equivalent to the sound barrier for sailboats. With some recent designs in boats, the latter is being broken as we speak. (Video of the record breaking run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnjyusAgk8I )

But that's neither here nor there. If we could all look at the world and our relationships with each other with such objectivity, we wouldn't be in the situations we're in now. No, basic animalistic selfishness gets in the way every time.

Do you know what the Americans gave to the Afghans during the Soviet invasion during the 80s? Swiss and French built weapons that couldn't be traced back to the US. If the US wanted to covertly support something like this, nobody would know until after it was over.

*note: I'm not going to hold my breath. And Darwoth, I'm not talking about manned colonies on the Moon or Mars, I'm talking interstellar travel. I doubt we'll see another starsystem with our own eyes within my lifetime, though I do expect the first true interstellar probe to launch sometime in the next 20-40 years (though I doubt I'll see results). Within my grandchildren's lifetime? For sure, assuming governments are willing to spend on further physics research. All this we've learned about bosons with the LHC should have came 10 years earlier if the US hadn't gotten all political and cut funding to a new accelerator. I could go on and on about this subject, but I'm not going to take any more away from this thread and not sure anyone else wants to really discuss it as much as I do. PM if you do and I'll post something. (Maybe we just need a "science wonders" thread....)
