If I understood you correctly you want the choice of whose **** you are going to suck to be in your hands (hands of the people)?
If that is freedom to you best option is for Ukraine to divide in two, three or whatever is the number of fractions that think they know whos **** is the best. That way all people will be free to chose. But as you know that would be bad for all of you.

I am not sure about that. Russia is closer their diplomatic and especially economic influence is stronger in the case of Ukrain. Politics dont allow you to simply chose who you like more. You need to chose the option that will bring you more benefits with less costs. Of course I am not the expert...
