Raiding

Postby DemonEyes » Tue May 28, 2013 3:46 pm

I knew two farmers once, they set up their fields next to each other. They both planted their seeds and built their huts.

The first farmer watched his field like a hawk, stalking the field and every plant he saw he gobbled up immediately, This satisfied his hunger for an hour until he finds the next sprouting shoot. After a while he realised that the shoots were barely satisfying his hunger anymore, so he sat and waited by each sprout until it had grown to a more sizable meal and then took it and ate well. After a few weeks of stalking the field he noticed no more sprouts were coming, and having no seeds left to plant he was forced to leave his field and hut and venture back to town for employment elsewhere.

The second farmer, watched his field, he approached every shoot and gave them food and water, taking a little from maybe one or two shoots but rarely did he eat his fill.. As the plants grew some more, he kept careful eye over them, making sure they always had enough food and water to grow strong and healthy, And he waited, the plants began to spread their seeds, and then the farmer swooped in, taking almost everything he has been waiting for. He had more than enough food to last him months and the seeds spread by those plants began their sprouting. After a few years the farmer has many fields full of plants, and more food than he could ever eat.

Which sort of Raider are you? Who here has raided a Newb? Do you regret it? Do they still play? Did you achieve a lot?

I don't know any farmers, but I know a couple foragers. They travel around the world and when they find some nice fruits - they pick as much as they can, often breaking the branches and destroying the bushes where the fruits hanged. But the foragers don't care. They search, gather, eat, and grow. Sometimes fruits are too high and the foragers simply continue the travel, or return when they have grown big enough.

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here. The mechanics of the game allow raiding of anyone you can find who is weaker than you. And if the mechanics allow it, it will happen. The tribe may have provided for a way for newbies to be safe, but I don't think that this little story is going to convince any other groups now or in the future. I'm afraid rifling through undefended players' claims is something you'll see a lot from anyone strong enough to risk leaving scents, no matter how many servers there are or how high the population... unless the devs change something.

Why was it about convincing? I thought it was a nice question to ask, Darwoth has said he watches bases to get decently sized before he raids.. so I thought to get others views on it.

I thought this whilst I was stripping out a base of new player, with a tinge of regret I took the stuff i got and thought about what I would have got if I had let them grow a bit..

Also a thought about how the population is declining, is this because raiding is so easy and rebuilding so boring?

It has more to do with how the game is progressing in terms of updates. Raiding, however, shouldn't be considered as being easy, since it all depends on who raids whom. Since braziers can do permanent damage to your biles (it can be gluttoned back, of course), you have to weigh the risk against the loot you think you can get from a claim. Raiding claims of starting players can certainly be easy, especially because they're unlikely to have braziers or sometimes don't have any defense at all.
