I was thinking the same thing. Coal clamps take 60 hours to burn out, yet you were producing metal on the second day of salem?

Actually I wonder if the OP meant buying metal off of Boston stands for 200 as "producing".
If not then Id gladly hear of the way to produce coal so fast.

Pretty sure there is no faster way to make them burn. Here is step by step process for you:

1.place coal clamp building sign, requires 20 blocks.
2.build coalclamp
3.light coalclamp with any source of fire (preferably a torch since you will most likely be lighting many at once)
4.wait 60h
5.right click pile of coal to collect it!

I think maybe he got the skills to build coalclamps and mines within 2 days, 2 days + 3 days (for coalclamp) means you had metal on day 5. Now, how long did it take for glenn or newb, or anybody else for that matter, to light their first smelter?

iirc, the first metal was being sold end of day 3

If a village power levels a single character you can have coalclamps running withint 4 hours of world start I'm sure. Soon as the clamps are running, you've got X days to build the mine and smelter to be ready for the first batch of coal.
