Quite tidy, we can all take a hint on box placement from this fellow and clearly we can take a few pointers from him as well on how to best defend our base. *nod nods*

He loses some points for lack of flair - he should have used the lovely new makeshift fence. It would have added some pizzazz to his base, and protected it equally well.

At least his style was very clean. No paved stone, no paths, no stone walls, now no character.

Too true, but think about all that dust! He'd have to invest in a maid's outfit he'd be cleaning it up so often!

If hes solo playing and can't be on enough for a real defence he may use the time it takes to build walls to push iron or other materials earning silver or whatever as his defences would only delay and eventually fail.
ive done this with a few of my farm bases, only really basic defence as i rebuild them faster if they would be raided and as i got nothing expensive in them i use the time to push out materials instead.
it all depends on what u use the claim for atleast for me.
sheds, houses mines and whatever isn't hard or cost much time to build when u get most of the stuff urself.
,even if u buy everything only his mine generate the money back in a few hours.only thing that takes time is flattening the ground/walls in my opinion

I don't think that's a good strategy at all. Look what it takes to build a townhouse:

http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Townhouse

6 glass panes, several trees worth of boards if your hammer and nail isn't that great for board planing, quite a few bars worth of nails. And all he had was a single fence? Anyone willing to spend that many resources on a townhouse, should have the time and resources to at least add a few braziers behind the walls. And granite, lime, and stone are pretty easy to find, no excuse to not have stone walls.

Of course, the whole thing looks like it was a comedy of errors, so not too surprising his defenses were poorly thought out.

with a claim that size 5-6 smelters would be decent and
all i was trying to say is 6 glass panes=1200s thats like 10-12 iron bars if u sell em, 5-6 smelters doing 1 run for example pays that off. (40 minutes of work, say 50 with chopping the stones from the walls etc)
3-4 runs in total and u got all bars for ur nails, money after selling any bars u don't need for boards u need to buy.
takes like 2 hours tops to get the money to buy the glass panes,do the nails etc.
2 hours of mining vs 2 days atleast to flatten out the whole area ,gathering lime, stone, granite + building a wall/walls playing a few hours aday.
Ofc it depends on what ur planning to do with ur claim in the end but if ur gonna have 1 wall and a few braziers its just a waste of time to build it seriously, u either invest in defence or u don't
PS: this is only my opinion im not saying what anyone else should be doing.

Thing is, he might not be that "old" of a player for that to all be easily that accessable, and that coupled with the fact that his flattened groun is already decayed back into grass almost completely which takes QUITE a long time, especially with the common theory decay only ticks on ground when logged in for the cache to update. So in theory he spent a good 100+ hours at that site giving him no excuse why not to have build atleast a few facking baziers, especially with the mine and smelter RIGHT there.
