...oh jesus. I hope you guys do not consider this forum as your store ?
It's just more like some pub where we all go to take a beer because well, that's kinda where we feel like home, without da wife yelling no beer today.
I do believe that you really should consider the idea of the bar more than the one of the store. Why on earth wouldn't you keep an eye on your concurrents, their ideas, and what your customers think about them, instead of just hiding that they exist, at least on your forum. Are you afraid of something ? If not, you probably shouldn't act like you are, because that's not really the best way to show the confidence you have on your own game.

...and also, it's very unpleasant.
Trust your enemies more than your friends. Your enemies will never betray you.

It was a video of other game building system and Trenial just asked what do people think about it. I wouldn't call it more than borderline advertisement but well it's your forum.

JohnCarver wrote:encouraging Salem forum users to register before it was too late etc. etc.

The only thing cept showing building system in game in that video is the intro with game web-page. There is no mention about registering before it's too late. Neither in video nor in its description.
This video demonstrates the progress on the player housing system.

First you start by claiming a plot of land. Then place the desired house foundation on relatively flat land. Next you begin the house construction process.

Floors require supporting pylons and walls also require pylons on the left and right. If any of these conditions are not met, the house will lose or not be able to support the structure. You will also notice real time cost calculations to determine the finalized design building cost.

I'll have another video next week, once I finish more of the system.
There isn't any word about 'register before it's too late' on their main page either(there is register for alpha button on page menu but that's it).

I do get your point of view but it's quite sad thing to not be able to discuss about other crafting games on forum. As as it is now everything could be counted as 'advertisement'. I can see where chief could came from as Trenial is the guy making models for that game but still..

Deleting the topic fully instead of moving it to hel so noone can read/see it at all rings an alarm for me. Cause well if whatever else happens that is:
TotalyMeow wrote:just bad business.

you guys might do the same again.
Now it is 'advert', next time it might be 'bad opinion about salem' that just looks bad at front page on forum.

You are doing good work on bringing this game from the dead* so just please, don't break it up with censoring and deleting 'bad for business' posts.
* - above statement just comes from reading the patchnotes as I didn't try the new salem yet myself. Although I'm pretty sure I'll give it a go when you'll be closer to finish on your dev roadmap

Good game should be able to defend by itself from competition. Just make sure salem ain't lacking anything and you'll be good ;)

PS. This so much:

Okay, if it makes you feel better, a bar wouldn't allow a customer to post fliers advertising other bars on the walls. We do keep an eye on other games to see what they are doing and what works, all of us have played many other permadeath/pvp/rpg/mmo/whatever type games and we continue to do so.

This is one of those slippery slope arguments. Have you seen me deleting posts and threads everywhere? No, you haven't. If I move an advertisement to Hinnom its still there advertising, just like if I move porn to Hinnom its still porn; clearly that won't work. They were deleted for the same reason images with profanity are deleted, they are simply not allowed and it is clearly stated in the rules that they are not. This forum isn't some petty kingdom of mine, I want to see this game succeed and I'm managing the forums accordingly; that includes asking details about why someone has a 'bad opinion about Salem', not removing their posts about it.

Please read my entire post again, the one you quoted a misleading fraction of to further your argument. My comment on bad business was explaining why the 'no advertisement' rule exists in the first place, not that anything I think might in some way harm Salem's business will be deleted.

Please stop posting details about what was in the deleted thread now. You're trying to repost it in a sneaky way and you will be banned if you don't stop.

I'm confident you can contact Trenial himself and get details as to his later post in that thread. It was very much a pure solicitation to register accounts 'before it is too late' along with several other pushy salesman tactics to drive traffic from here to there. The thread was fine while it was happy talk about another crafting game. It clearly went over the edge when it became a 'pitch' for any and all players to go register for it.

As for the bar analogy. Chatting in a bar about another local bar is fine. Throwing up a giant sign, coupons, and fliers for the bar down the street is not.

Kind of similar to tactics such as hiding the current amount of players on-line? I'm fairly certain the only reason you had for deleting it is because the comments were all positive. If everyone hated the video he posted and started flaming the game he's working on I doubt you'd have removed it.

The world could have loved it or hated it. Posting for the sake of advertisement is not allowed.

Yeah sure, and your excuse for it being an advertisement was his post he made later on rather than the original post so... good argument??

No, responses to the thread had nothing to do with whether or not it was against the rules and was therefore removed.

Why does it matter if the solicitations began immediately or a couple posts in? It's still solicitation.
