As a newbie, I'm wondering. What does it mean to defend your town? Are stone hedges, plank fences, and a ton of braziers not defending? Seeing a few players rip through that town I wonder what 'defending' means.
The best defenses are hiding, looking poor, or making powerful friends. Walls and braziers are only part of defense. They will keep out the casual raiders, but not the powerful ones.
You can try to hide, and if you're lucky, you won't be found for a very long time. You can try to look poor so that when someone does find you, they see a few chests and a hovel and some walls and braziers and decide it's not worth the attempt and move on. Or you can contact whichever group on your server is strongest and make friends so that they will both not raid you and protect you from other raiders.
