Long story short, my friend destroyed his leanto to place it elsewhere (dumb mistake) and got KO'd. How can he get back here?

Have him in your party and let him follow the arrow back.

Also, if the character logged out near the homestead, can it log back in and rebuild the lean-to after it is destroyed?

1. Not really, unless you have a friend at the base you can walk to using the arrow.
2. You can log out and come back at the same spot in the wilderness, but you might get unlucky with bear and snake spawns at the site. If someone claims the area and you dont have permissions, there will also be problems and you have to start at Boston.

That "arrow" to a friend. How exactly does that work. We are in a party now. I can fiend an arrow to my home, but where to find the "arrow" to a friend?

It "disappears" sometimes.
But if you click the group portrait icon of your friend (should be on left upper corner) you will walk in his direction like follow a toon.
Maybe the small Arrow will shown up then on the corners of your window.
It is just a drawed line arrow (no clue how to explain better).

Btw. also it would be good if you make yourself a Survey and look where in the world you are, maybe you can take a shorter way, when you use the teleport points in the world (like Limers Front).
If you are far away from Boston, then it can be a very annoying and long journey.
Also your friend can make from time to time a survey too, to check how far he is still traveled.
