I can confirm putting a Bible in a stump does not work (left it there for over a week, maybe other items need to be added??)
I live near the darkness and have been into it a couple of times, as far as my humours allowed me, nothing found there :s

I've heard you might be able to potentially find it inside a specific fish that is in a specific biome in the darkness.

Just went to the mountain and the top of it, at least at the top there's nothing, i guess i'm going to explore around what i can..

I think at some point there will spawn an npc call: 'Abdul Alhazred" and you have to do a quest for him to get the necronomicon.
Seriously though anyone went to the effort to read HP lovecratft books as Salem world is loosely based on his realm ?

I haven't personally, not much for horror. In the end the discussion was abandoned when the "book release" turned out to be a hoax. That or every overly active player hunting for it in salem wasn't enough.
