I haven't gotten very far in this game at all- only as far as a wood pile at my lean-to. How can I tell how big my claim is, or do I have one? Do I ned to do anything specific to get the info?

you do not untill you purchase a writ and build one.

Use Ender's Client and turn on the Claim button. you can find it here, Artifice & Arcana

You don't need a custom client to find out how large a claim is. The same control button above the mini-map is a part of the original client, and thus all the others (one would have to explicitly remove the function). Interacting with the claim post also displays the claim.
