So what do I do when my home is crawling with snakes? I can't outrun them, I can't fight them and if they manage to bite me, I'm dead.
I don't know any cliff area where I could shake them off since I'm still new...

Will they despawn? How long might that take?

Log out ten minutes or so. It should be enough for the area to despawn, assuming no one else comes there.

snakes don't cross deep water either so if you have swimming that's an option.

Build a fence round your place so they cant get in and I've heard that paving prevents spawns inside the fences but I can't speak for accurate info there.

Don't lift random hollow logs, they have a chance to spawn snakes.

Using the 10 minute trick worked. Had to try twice because the second load had a new snake.

I don't have enough cliffs or any deep water near my camp, so I'm fairly helpless when it comes to snakes and bears.

When I can make a permanent home, I'll be sure to fence it all in...

Snakes won't enter water at all.

Paving prevents spawning of anything. I believe a personal claim will prevent animals from spawning, too. (Was the mechanic in HnH, and I haven't seen anything to prove it wrong here so far.)

If only Pclaims prevented animals from going in there. Damn snakes, always get me when I am afk.

Yes but not from spawning inside (so you still can be unlucky when you login).
Pavement would stop that.
