Character didn't save?

Hello,
I started this game on Monday and stayed in the tutorial zone while I got my daughter started in the game so she could play with me. I finished the tutorial but never left the area and then logged out. Now when I logged in today it's asking me to create a new character and I don't see the one I was playing. Do they get deleted or something if you don't leave the tutorial area?
