I fill the smelter up with 12 iron ore and 13 lime and only ever get 1 bar of pig iron. Anyone know why?

You usually get between a 1 bar and 2 bars.
By using a alloying set, you'll get 2 bars more often.

When do I need to wear it? When I mine the ore? When I light the smelter? When I place the ore into the smelter? During the wrole smelting process till the moment I take the bar(s) out?

You need to wear it when lighting the smelter.

he probs remembers when you could get 2-3 per smelt dont think he would be saying that having to wear it when lighting is dumb

Correct. It's dumb how much waste happens. If there is a formula I'm missing that will give me a better chance of getting 2 or 3 Pig Iron, ok, then I'm dumb and I haven't figured it out yet, but if it's just how it is, it's dumb to have such a low random chance of getting 1 iron from 12 ore and 13 lime per run.
