I had been gone for a long time and I am rebuilding a stone wall
but no matter what I try I am not able to build a gate between
the posts. Anyone able to help me with what I am missing or give
me some easy to follow instructions?

You probably managed to slightly misalign your walls, they have to be exactly lined up and exactly 2 squares apart or you cant build a gate.

any easy fix? or is tearing down the entire wall about the only option?

It depends on how far off they are, if you post a screen shot it will be easier to help you.

Bring up the wall recipe and begin to create a new corner post. Take that corner post shadow and align it by pressing Shift and scrolling to get it straight and in the center of the square. Then, compare it to the two wall corner posts that you have. You should be able to find the one that is aligned wrong and only destroy that section of wall. Or just destroy the shorter segment of wall so you have less to destroy and rebuild but you'll end up with a wall that's a little off. Or you can send me a PM with pictures and maybe I can give you better advice if I can see a screen shot of your entire wall and what you're dealing with here. (You can post a screen here, but a lot of people don't want to do that)
