You can also make a new alt, spawn a cricket and go stumping and exploring. If you travel a while you will spot a salamander.

Yes they show up on the latikai client radar. They are mobile and extremely fast and only caught by running after them after you right click them on the mini-map. They are not that rare but hard to catch. I think they spawn more in the 'green woods' biome.

by extension, if you're using my client, have a look at this plugin: kritter plugin. It was intended for frogs but will also work for squirrels/salamanders.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.
