Did you edit your hosts file back in 2016 when Salem had a DNS problem ?
One possible explanation would be you experience some weird DNS problems and explicit entries for salem in the hosts file allow you to bypass these issues.
Did you try to restart your computer or scan for viruses ? Did you try to ping any page you know would respond to ping ?
