Each wall page details how important it is to have your start corner placed properly on a tile to insure alignment. Since Salvage, however, I find it much more convenient to build a corner, extend it two segments, build another corner, then salvage the two wall segments leaving the correct spacing for a gate. This does seem to eliminate the need for extra starter corners, and if you have all of the materials on hand at once, when you salvage the two wall segments in the middle, there's no apparent splash damage.
I still tend to build my walls on a tile. Has anyone built a wall with a tilted starter corner? Does it still allow you to "Extend East" if it's really North-North-East?
The no-splash feature if walls are destroyed shortly after being built is not mentioned on any wall pages either, nor the Splash Damage page.

Walls that have been 'recently' created will not splash.
