How to mine?

I found an abandoned mine entrance that seems to just be the very first beginnings of a mine. I tried mining with a shovel, as the wiki sais it's possible after lit many fires beside the walls. Sadly it still gives me the "You need a pickaxe to mine ore." message.

Here is a picture of the mine, what am I doing wrong?

You no longer need to burn the cracked rock walls. The only walls you need to burn in a mine are the black walls. To mine all you need to do is activate the mine action in your adventure menu and click on the wall. Mining consumes lots of phlegm so make sure you have either tea or food on hand

Edit: You also now require a pickaxe to mine a wall in a mine.

Thanks... But how to get a pickaxe without ability to mine? :/

Pig iron costs like 200s from the npc merchant, I need 5 of those to build an anvil so that's 1000s, and I need another approximately 510s for 3 bars of wrought iron. That is a grand total of 1510s or 50 indian necklaces. Again, am I doing this wrong, or am I really expected to find these?

Yup. That's pretty much it.

You might get lucky and find a pickaxe in the player stalls for sell a bit cheaper. However, you'll still need the anvil so might as well shop for iron on the player stalls as well. It should be fairly easy to find some cheaper than what the NPC sells them for.

How do new players begin the game then? I understand the ability to sell/buy from the npc guy if you just need the quick nail or flask, but... This is um... I really don't understand.

Well, mining opens the later stage of the game, so maybe you have been farming cotton, have turkeys, collecting rare drops to sell to get the money.
Once you have the pick axe you are to be ready. There are stuffs in the mine that can kill you, so you better be prepared. So on so forth.

Ok, I guess I understand. It really feels kind of counter intuitive at times though. My buddy really likes mining, and black smithing, so he's just sitting on that tree of skills not really knowing what to do.

He finds a way to make some silver. Buys some iron, makes an anvil, smelter, and pickaxe. Starts mining?

Indian feathers. Not that hard to find. Your chances increase with additional levels of Flora and Fauna. Make some leather or rabbit skins. Also an abandoned mine really does a lot of the work for you. You can find someone to sell you a pickaxe cheap really. It really is not hard to make silver.

Yeah, just time consuming. you can also supplement your feather income by beating up Crickets, which is super easy for even an extremely weak character.
