I created my account and character almost 2 years ago, but only played for a few monthes. Still, my character was quite well developed when i left, because the average players on the servers was around 50 per week (as i remember). Today I read about the existence of this game (I thought it was shut down), and logged in with my old account. At first my character's icon showed up at the website (i saw a character icon with my hat and mask on), but then it disappeared, and when i launched the game it stated that i don't have any characters yet.

Is there any chance to play with my old character or is it completely dead?

There was a wipe in februrary 2014. If you played before that then all your characters are gone and there is no way to get them back. There were drastic changes to game's core mechanics and character development so it was necessary for everyone to start over.

I thought something like that happened, but found no clue about it on the forums...
