Well my wall was on my claim but the area directly outside the gate was not, so perhaps claiming the tiles beyond the gate is necessary, i've seen many a claim where the walls encompass the claim and that offers no protection against this.

Yep, as I mentioned in the bit that I added at your suggestion. Claiming 2-3 tiles beyond the walls that you make is the requirement to make griefers not bother.

Walls not claimed are essentially worthless.

hi can you explain the "don't pick up an arrowhead until you've got a feather"? I've spotted 2 arrowheads and have picked them both up since I haven't seen feathers yet.

It is a way to keep your inventory sane. Carrying around several arrowheads in anticipation of the next feather is a waste of space. If you are lucky enough to find a feather it is much easier to find an arrowhead to match it.

That said, I usually do keep one arrowhead in my inventory since I am an optimist and a few in one of my inspiration urns in my compound just in case. However, I will drop the arrowhead if I really need the space for something more useful.

I logged in today to find someone had built a wall across my gate. Since my character is fairly new i don't have the required phlegm to put a dent in a stone hedge and i'm now locked inside my own claim!

Moral of the story: It probably isn't a good idea to put a wall up that you wouldn't be able to knock down yourself if you needed to, course in theory someone could wall off your claim entirely but that takes abit more effort than just blocking the gate. Also you might consider pushing your plegm up to be quite an important goal to combat this particular stunt.

Mmm, a better way to put it is "Don't build a wall on areas you haven't claimed if you can't knock them down". Building a wall on an unfriendly claim isn't fun nor easy enough to make it griefable really. (Unless this happened on a claim, if so that's the first I've heard of it.)

But yes, that's a good idea for me to mention it.

This may be a good excuse for extending your claim one tile beyond your walls.

It's a very good reason for sure. I've always done it 2-3 tiles out for this reason, but I neglected to mention it when I first wrote the guide. Woops XD

And yes: Beginners see arrow heads and think "Oooh shiny!". But on average you will find ~2 arrowheads per feather. So beginners often waste a bunch of inventory space and some of their precious storage hording arrow heads for some reason.

 In-game tutorial & this instruction guide are frustrating, difficult, unclear & is going to send most players to other games. You should probably mention that in that mod a lot of the interface disappears. I can't find the !@&%^ed Skill button / menu in the mod, let alone continue. NOT user friendly & I'm an avid gamer. I even play craft based mmorpg! This is very slap-dash & needs tons of work.

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE:
"Login on the "vanilla" client found in the account section of this website. And then immediately close it. What you're going to need is a custom client by either Enders or Apxe. "

The regular client is easier to understand. Until you know your menus, why you need them and how to use them, modding is pointless.

Log in and learn the control interface first, then mod.
Omfg, sorry I followed this. Organize your damned tutorial!
People will stop playing if this doesn't get more accessible. WURM is about a million times better atm. Perhaps that would be a good example.

This isn't a tutorial, this is a guide. It's opinion based and doesn't have to be perfect. You were rather rude about your criticism, but I'll think about it and compare the new vanilla client (remember this guide was written before the UI update). Doesn't mean I agree with you at all. I would vote a better way to handle it would be to give a list of hotkeys for the various windows so that what you learn is completely client independent. Which I might add is already available in the Help! stickies here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=507

As to the wurm comment: You're in a *beta*. Wurm has been in production for 3-4 times longer than Salem. If it's not better there had better be some serious questions as to why it isn't. Wurm I might add is finally finishing their extended dev stage and is "releasing", a step Salem is at least a year off of.

I didn't seen an mention of this in the guide, but do the particular alchemical purities of dross affect your crops/pots? If so, what would be the best way to utilize this? Thanks!
