Slotting

So, I can't quite figure the slotting difficulty out after reading the wiki.
As far as I can tell, the tool tip on a item has 2 numbers for the difficulty. Lets say I want to slot a pearl into a jute shirt. the pearl is 50 to 0. As I have read, if the pearl matches? the jute shirt, the difficulty of the smaller "0" gets added to the difficulty of the jute shirt. can't remember jute shirt difficulty lets say 25. so total difficulty of 25. if it doesn't match, it adds the large number 50 to 25 to get a difficulty of 75.
How exactly do you know what items match a certain piece of clothing? I cant find any symbol on clothing like on the slotable items. the pearl has 2 symbols next to difficulty, cant remember the 1st but the second is thread and needle. Is it just a hidden value on clothes?
Also, when you do say get a final difficulty of 75. How does this translate into the percentage chance of actually being successful? I haven't messed around with a lot of slotting yet, I have been collecting them to compare and see what I want to do. But most times I have had a little look, it usually just gives a 71% chance. I have also increased my thread and needle score to mid 40's, and haven't seen any reduction to this percentage.

I am not sure how it exactly work but until someone more competent answers I'll do :D

So the pearl has:

Difficulty: 50 to 0
Proficiency Type:
Cloak & Dagger
Natural Philosophy

You would have to get C&D and NP up to have more success with it. Top difficulty is 50 and it can go down to 0.
So if you get clothing with 0 difficulty and are good enough to slot the pearl with maximum success you'll have 100% chance to do so.

There is no more matching. The wiki must be out of date there. Now we just have a generic difficulty on clothes and a proficiency based difficulty on artifacts.

So, the greater your Thread and Needle, the more likely you are to get a reduction in difficulty when you craft clothing. You can get some benefits early on so raising your T&N just a little bit will make lower difficulty clothes. Raising it a lot can get you all the way down to 0 eventually. There's also always some random to it.

As for the artifact, the higher your proficiencies, the lower on the artifact's scale the difficulty will go. So, if you have something that relies on C&D and T&N, then higher proficiencies there will make it easier to slot into any clothing.

I don't remember the formula now for how the percent is decided, but you can see what the percent chance will be before you slot something and decide if you want to risk it. I suggest saving your better artifacts for later. You won't be wearing jute for long.

IIRC the formula was originally: for every 50 of the corresponding proficiencies you have, you halve the chance of failure.

i.e. 50 t&n on an artifact with 85 to 45 difficulty results in 65% chance of failure, while 100 t&n results in 55% chance of failure.

I'm not sure whether this is still correct, or how multipple proficiencies factor in.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.
