There's no simple way to do it. You can put one of the items in a container and it'll automatically switch to the next. You can also left click and pick up one of the items in your inventory and it'll select the next option, then you can put the item back in your inventory and it'll stay on the second one. You can also shift items between your backpack and your inventory to better select crafting needs.

specifically, it will select the items that were added to your inventory last.
Taking them out of storage in the correct order will typically solve your problem.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

I am able to do this by (l-click)picking up the item I want to put into the recipe and l-click it on a like item that's already highlighted to be in the recipe. Then you just drop the item that you just picked up into an empty slot of your inventory.

I only recall doing this with both items in my inventory. I'm not sure if it would work by pulling the new item from a container, but I don't see why not.

EDIT: For clarification of the mechanic as I understand it. The game is probably not understanding that I want to "switch" these items. It is doing it's regular "use the last items put into inventory" thing. When you pick up Item A and place it down on top of Item B, Item B is no longer in your inventory and Item A is now the last item placed into your inventory.that fits the recipe. It doesn't switch back to Item B once you put it back into your inventory, because when you pull up a recipe it locks the most recently added items that fit the recipe until they disappear from the inventory.

Wrong, there is.

This, and:

1.) Take all the item you want to use in a recipe and put them either in your backpack (most convenient imho) or any container (a box, chest, ...).
2.) Take those, and only those items you want to have in the recipe into your inventory, so they were the last that entered your inventory.
3.) click again on the recipe in your quickbar or the menu, to "re-open" the crafting window for whatever you wanted.
4.) ...
5.) Profit?!

Inventory uses a last in first out method of selecting what you have. Picking things out of a container in the order you want, the last thing you pick being the first you want to use, will work.

If you don't have a container handy, do this: Pick up each item that you want to use starting with the last one and ending with the first and put it back in your inventory. So, if you want to make three meat dishes, one with rabbit, one with deer and one with beaver, you pick up the beaver and set it down, then the deer, then the rabbit. The game will then ignore any other meat you have and use those three things for the next three recipes.

Putting stuff you definitely don't want to use into a backpack is also a good practice.

This is the solution that works best for me. Thanks a lot for all the answers :)
