I for one didn't like the latest big update and wipe at first, but its ok now, no big deal. I'm to a point with several characters that the studying isn't so important, biles come slow no matter what and the little bit of content added some good chang to the game. I also think what Jorb and Loftar have done over the last years with Salem is great, I haven't been around as long as most but the game is great and like no other. For those who don't like it quit or go full time making your own game (use Salem as a model). If you spend 8-12 hours a day for the rest of your life, you may create the perfect game and not even have to try and buy someones elses. For those who don't have anything to do, I envy you... I never have enough time to get everything done. "Salem Time" with a good drink and a comfortable chair is the my favorite and most relaxing part of my day. (my wife would debate this) I have never tried Haven, but once the new release is out I wil definately give it a go.
As for the population issues - permadeath makes that a tough sell to the average player and to think a few more items will explode the population is wishful thinking. I think it would would have been a shock if this game ever had more than a small cult type following. It's simple to see that the slaughter of new players by our experienced players will never allow the population to grow, ever. Noobs are any games most desired comodity, here they are scalp counts and then people ***** about declining pop numbers... lol ... I don't blame the tribe or a few others, but they definately don't help the cause. Welcome to the new Plymouth, give it another 6 months or when were below 30, then whine and cry for real.

But hey, I for one am enjoying what we have, life is good.

Permadeath is extremely appealing to a small proportion of gamers. It is a good thing rather than a problem. In past times, salem has had many more players than it has now, and they are gone not so much because they've died but because jorbtar have failed to provide new content to what many consider an unfinished game, and instead have on various occassions made the game worse instead of better. New player retention rates have always been low whether on plymouth or anywhere else, and i have personally observed 10x more noobs quit due to lack of content/updates, boredom/game is just not for them etc than i have seen quit because they died. I still see noobs who died making new characters, and doubt very much that the noob slaughtering is even having a significant impact on the population. The problem is that the game has become unappealing enough even to the veteran players who have played it and enjoyed it for a long time that even they are failing in their attempts to enjoy it for what it is, and leaving one by one.

Wow is it just me or did it sound like Jorb was basically giving up on Salem?

The game is always on our minds, we discuss it often, and we try to learn from it.

fixed that for you.

My hope is that you draw the right conclusions quickly - since there is a quite large risk that you might repeat your failure in H&H.

@"tribe-kills-server-pop":
There was a statement quite in the beginning of Providence: "Settle along the coast or be killed". In hindsight it was the best help(!) the tribe could give to the other players. Just judging from the findings of the last months, the best stuff you need to develop quickly is all found along the coast - best fishes, high purity water, high purity plants for feeding worms, high purity granite/lime.
In feudalism, it's your count that votes...

Pretty sure I'm only repeating what's been said by others in the past, but when Salem was birthed some wondered why the wheel was being reinvented. If it wasn't broken why fix it. Salem has always had potential but Haven is so much more fleshed out. Remaking it always seemed the better option and what I've seen of the new graphics are promising.

Here's to supporting the crazy devs on their crazy projects. Whatever is being updated, I'll play it, because if you can focus through all the tears Seatribe games are truly unique and original in many ways. If they had a larger team as crazy as inspired as they are, unmotivated by capitalist greed, something amazing could be made in a timeframe everyone would be pleased with.

That, sir, hit the nail on the head, I think.

New content would be great and all, but what this game really needs is tweaking of some of it's systems to encourage socialization (primarily improvement to claim permissions management). A couple of weeks of development in that would give players more to do than a couple of months worth of new content development. Hell, just claim permissions shouldn't take more than a weekend. Of course, some other systems would be needed to encourage society building (player-built vendor stands that can sell and buy goods, for example), but even permissions alone would be an immense boon to player retention.
