well... particle system is the way to spawn the smoke with that animation. Nothing weird with it. Particle system can become heavy for many reasons, but can be very light too, it depends. When i lit 30 coal camp, i expect a bit of lag if no "safe system" is implemented. A system that would lower the particles on the screen... but, ehy, that's coding, not polygons. Also, it happens only WHEN you do certain things, not always.
3d models, though, are easier to fix with the auto-reduction of poligons via software. (maybe)
I worked with particles, but not with 3d models... so i could see as "easy" something that isn't easy.
