I ***** it.
it is not so metter for people.
I'll try Biddas,
Like I said earlier, one of my best friends is married to a Ukrainian woman he met while working for an anti-nuke group working in Ukraine in the 90's, so I get all the news the day of from her. She turned me on to the beauty of
Ukrainian Culture a long time ago. I've always wanted to visit Kiev.
For those Americans that don't understand the
Euromaiden protest here are the basics:
Ukrainian demographics are split between the "Ukrainian" Western part of the country and the "Russian" Eastern part of the country by language and culture. The Western part and Kiev is generally more European.
The Orange Revolution was the first progressive protest.
It was a protest against voting irregularities by the Russian Faction led by Yanukovych.
The Russian Faction tried to poison the leader of that movement.
Once they were in power the Orange Revolution leaders failed to bring the country together with the Russian Faction and the revolution stalled.
The Russian faction and Yanukovych won the next election and illegally (according to the Human Rights Court) jailed the leaders of the Orange Revolution.
They changed the constitution to give the executive more power.
They repressed journalist and the opposition parties.
They canceled trade deals with Europe and instead borrowed massive amounts of money from Russia which sparked the current protest.
They tried to put harsh restrictions on peaceful protest actions which has led to greater and greater violence in the streets.
The protest movement has been calling for new elections and reforms back to the previous constitution.
A no confidence vote failed this last Tuesday but the Russian Faction of the government refused to allow amendments to it about the constitutional changes.
The protest has been growing throughout a long cold winter and has been happening in other cities besides Kiev.
The current government would not succeed in holding Parliament if elections were held.
The Protesters have seized various political and government buildings throughout the protest.
The government leaders are getting desperate and are using the national police to try and clear the main protest group at "Independence Square" in Kiev.
Over 30 people have died.
The EU and Western countries are imposing travel bans and sanctions on the government.
...that brings us to this week.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIqbf81BzooWhat the revolution is really about is the age old conflict in Ukraine.
Which way does the future lead? Towards Russia and the Oligarch Economy and the significant past they share with it's view of Ukraine as an outskirt of Russia or towards Europe and the EU with a westernization of it's economy away from manufacturing and energy with greater social/journalistic/economic/democratic freedoms and reforms. That's what this protest is really about.
