Not only would a cape provide a huge amount of thermal protection (14+ depending on type), but the Miner's Hat gives NO indication that it provides any thermal protection at all. A Jute Cap provides 5 TP. As JC warned,

This is probably also relevant:
JohnCarver wrote:ok ok ok. Because the seasons didn't officially "Change" to a coldsnap. We were just IN a coldsnap when the patch dropped I have come to conclusion that perhaps the temperature was actually behaving like an everbloom afterall.

As such, I have now changed it to the harshest Coldsnap mathematically possible for the remainder of its duration. Good luck

I have seen that announcement, but i also sent another picture of a person with more thermal stuff than me and is currently laying down on the ground for warmth. Something a new player won't be able to do until they gather 1000 silver (Which they also need for nails and iron for the first items they get). Again I state that i am not worried about myself (Just got a blanket), I just want to see more people playing this game.

Well everything I'm hearing now is kinda strengthening my point. This is my girlfriend with all of her slots filled with clothing and items. Plenty of weaving related items on it as well and shes cold. I for one love the challenge but again as the original post was MEANT to be for. Is this really best for new players?

The Priestly Tunic provides only 3 TP whereas a typical coat would provide 15+. A Priestly Robes offers 10. Both the characters in the Providence and your GF are not wearing appropriate coats

Tell your GF to get a real coat :P

Edit to add: I agree that New Players are the ones most affected by this change.

Yes, you are correct that NEW Players will have the most difficult time dealing with this change. However, my responses included clothing available to new players that is BETTER than what you, your GF and the unknown player in providence are using to provide thermal protection.

HAT: Jute hat better than Miner's Hat
Cape: Get one (although I admit that a player might freeze to death before getting maerials for a cape is possible)
Jacket: The Priestly Robes is sufficient after you move it to Jacket slot and add a Jute shirt.

Hat, jacket and cape provide the most TP of all the clothes, so they are very important. Obviously shoes are necessary by decree of JC

You have a valid point about the trouble this may cause a NEW player, but there is no excuse for the players in the examples you provided (you, GF, anonymous providence)

The clothing i was talking about was my miner's set ;-; I'm perfectly fine in my hunter set. Thanks for realizing the whole issue with new players and this update though. http://imgur.com/a/GDBT2

You guys are still ignoring the fact that this cold snap was artificially made to be as harsh as possible and as such shouldn't be a valid point of reference.
It is to assume that regular cold snaps would be easier to deal with.

True, I guess I'll just wait to see where this is heading. Hopefully the process will be sped up

You do realize they are only doing that for the fun of it, right?
