Looking for a town to join! (edited)

Hey there!
I'm a big crafting game lover, I played Salem in the beta but my old character's gone for some reason. I was away for a whiiile, but got drawn back in recently. I used to play solo and just go into the NPC town (that was a thing right? I'm not mad) to exchange for items that I didn't have the skill or advantage of location to get as well, but now that's not an option, I'm hoping to jump onto someone else's town so that I can be a cog in the wheel of society again.

I've noticed in other people's threads that there's a call to explain what you have to offer a town, and I know since I started a new character that I'm back to noob territory, so if you're not willing to have a new person on board, what advice can you give about what skills I should build to make myself a good prospective townie? I've just been building skills generally based on what's around the location that I was dropped in at the moment. Should I keep going with that, or is there some particular kind of specialisation that's in high-demand in towns?
I have no idea what it's like to play Salem in a group! I haven't seen a soul since I rejoined. I know that there's some high risk involved, particularly from what I see in the comments, but it also seems like it has a lot of potential for reward.

I don't expect anyone to sink in money or resources into me as a player (if that's even a thing lol, idk, I began my crafting grind life on runescape, haha) I just want to be able to trade fairly and work hard in a group so that I can get the most of my time in it before my fix is sated. I don't even mind being out in the wilderness alone, just want to be able to walk to a town and say hi. Trade just makes crafting a lot more satisfying, when you can get some item you can't yet get yourself, y'know? And it kinda provides a good metric for the value of what you're crafting, and medium-level goals to set.

So anyway, what's your town like? How do you decide who you want in it? How big is it? What kind of levels of effort or commitment are you looking for? I wanna know the deal!

Thanks for your time!

Hii,
I'm still playing several times a week since I posted this but I've been learning a lot and thought I'd update with what might interest other people.

Continuing to try to get the most out of the game as a solo player so far, which is an interesting challenge. I'm a timid hunter--partially because my interent is bad so I can't have very quick responses so the most basic source of income for new players is a slow one for me. I've been playing it very safe so far and slowly building up my skills in every direction so I can continue to branch out and make my weird little solo farm have as much as I need on it. If anyone wants me to join their town I'm happy to move/abandon a bunch of it, though, especially if anyone has a mine. I haven't prospected any nodes close to my claim yet, and don't really want to go hiking for a million years to find one.

Anyway though I know the Salem community is still pretty small and niche but if any Australian players or other people in similar time zones are around give me a yell, otherwise I'll continue doing my thing I guess~

I'm an Australian player, GMT +10 and online at irregular times anywhere between midday and 11pm. Only speak English unfortunately :P and my HS is indigodecaying
