You can always recognize when a place is abandoned. The dark. The damp. The silence. That is how my brother's estate sat, idle, upon my arrival in the New World.

It had been quite some time since my eyes lit up at the sight of a new letter from my beloved brother Waspo. It was not rare for him to go without writing, but by the time I noticed, it had been months. Soon, his absence was a glaring hole. The days began to pile up and I went from wondering to worrying. Finally, with the crops taken root in the field, I had a chance to leave the family estate in England and venture across the vast ocean to find him.

When I arrived, I half expected to find him amidst a grand wedding ceremony, so vast he had forgotten to write - or staring at some strange relic he had acquired in one of his oft foolish adventures. But, oh, how I would have loved to be the fool myself, angry at him for not writing. Instead, I found silence.

His estate, once described to me in letters as a thriving shop where curious trinkets traded hands with Salem's scholars, was now nothing more than a decrepit ruin. All that was left of his hard work, his sweat and blood, was piles of crumbling rocks adorned with abandoned cobwebs. I could hear the wind whistling through a mossy log while tumbleweeds rolled across a gentle knoll. A handful of clovers caught my eye as they grew through the cracks in a broken clay pot. Nearby, a nest was covered in the decomposed skeleton of an unfortunate bird. Waspo was no where to be seen, and to make matters worse, I was now stranded in a strange land with nothing and no one to rely on.

My brother, the cad, could sell coal in Newcastle. But I am nothing more than a farmer - and an honest one at that! I must find my brother, but how can I with only a few measly coins in my pocket? The only thing I have is the land belonging to Waspo, and I guess now... to me? Perhaps someone will pay me a few silver for the junk he kept about? If I can raise enough, I can hire someone to investigate this curious disappearance and find my lost brother!

It has been a couple of fruitless days sifting through the mire that was once my brother's curio shoppe. I have found nothing startling, but cobwebs and the beetles that call this ruin home. Perhaps someone would want this detritus, and mayhap even pay me a few silver to take it off my hands. Surely, these curious little beetles are worthy of someone's study - although I am not smart enough to know what could be learned from them. Still, I must sell what I can to fund the search for my missing brother.

It was almost dark before I heard the footsteps of a man. He approached the ruins with a clumsy gait. Round as a barrel, he took fright when he saw me in the ruins. Either through fear or foolishness he stuttered accusingly, "Y-Y-You there, who are you!"

"I am Waspo's brother, but you may call me Greenthumb. Have you business with my brother?"

A dirty silk mopped his sweaty brow. The man sweat as if he was not made for the harsh climate of Salem, for the balmy humors surely did not agree with his rotund constitution. Or perhaps it was the furs with which he draped himself, despite the warm weather? Regardless, after realizing I was not a threat, he replied, "No good sir. I know not for a man named Waspo. I merely visit this place to sate my... desires."

"Desires?"

"I am a collector, good sir, of things that slither and creep." At that moment, his eyes darted towards some discrete movement. A beetle had come out from under a log to see what the commotion was. His eyes fixed on it like a man starving looks at meat upon the campfire. He continued, "Dost thou have need of these bugs?"

I shook my head no, and that was all he needed to hear as he lunged towards the creature. Caught in his meaty, moist hands the man licked his sweaty mustache. He produced a thin strand of silk from a hidden pocket and began to wrap it around the beetle, struggling to be free. He then dangled it from the thread, watching as its tiny limbs furiously tried to peddle in mid air.

The stranger stood there, transfixed by the creature until I spoke. "Sir, do you have any help to offer? I am looking for my brother."

He snapped back, angrily, "Are you a half-wit? I already said I know nothing of your brother Wespa. If the man is gone, try a doctor! Now good day sir!" And with that, he marched off, cracking branch and brush caught underfoot.

I was left there, alone at twilight. But rude or not, the man had given me a good place to start. Tomorrow, I shall travel into town to see if I can find a doctor. Perhaps my brother has fallen ill and if so, I shall rush to his bedside at once!
