We've only been playing for a month or so, that's just what our base looks like right now. We just got to making blistersteel, so we haven't been able to make the gates yet.

Well, might be too late by now but, if you have any stockpiles of metal or can buy any, get yourself the supplies to build some more braziers and fuel them and get a gate up. Try to fix that plank fence too, but I'd stick to getting the brick up assuming you don't have any holes in it that the picture doesn't show. You might consider abandoning the outer area there and just putting your new braziers inside the brick and trying to move your valuables in there. You definitely should have put more effort into your braziers and left the plank and brick walls for later. Stone alone will keep almost everyone out with proper brazier coverage.

All of our money, and all of our everything else is gone. They took the supplies we were saving to construct the brick wall not 4-5 hours before we were ready to put it up. Just super unlucky I guess. They said their way of "punishing" us for not having it up yet was to take all of our clothing and everything we've been working on for the past month and leave us naked in a cold snap. Seems a little extreme.

Well, welcome to Salem, I suppose.

Try to relocate further away from your location next time, (preferably a landmark away) perhaps you'll be more lucky and not come across them, provided you actually even have motivation to build up again after losing so much. Though in other senses, I'd say you have gained a good experience out of it, and when you're ready to come back for round 2 you'll be able to know how to repel against possible similiar experiences. Maybe. Not all learn the first time. But do please note the advice given to you in this thread on your defence and you'll do much better in terms of living standards.

yep, sounds like you at least still have your characters. so it's not a total loss. Items can be replaced, characters, not so easily after a certain point.

next time, build a stone wall first, and have braziers lined up every other tile.

make a torchpost line behind your braziers, too.

focus on your defense first and foremost before you begin accumulating riches.

you're lucky you only lost 1 month's worth of work. that's not too bad. consider this a valuable lesson on the importance of a good defense and heavy brazier coverage.
