America didn't "invent" the Internet - web was birth in CERN (Europe).

The internet is not the same thing as the world wide web.

Cables? I thought it was a series of tubes.
I guess this is the kind of thing that gets bumped/necroed when the forums are slow.

You keep editing your posts completely a few minutes after posting. :/ Try thinking them out first.

You're on the right track. Darpa connected the first computers together and made several discoveries about how best to transfer data between computers. Arpanet was something they made with those discoveries.

Arpanet became the internet which originally was a military, scientific, and academic computer network. It started in the US, but it did begin to spread to other countries at that point. I suggest The Cuckoo's Egg by Cliff Stoll as a novel to read about that era of the internet.

I remember when the WWW started. I also remember when AOL became a thing. The WWW structure has been vital to keep the internet organized and usable and it's genius, but I do think that AOL was what really made the internet popular and accessible to the majority of new people back when the internet / www was still an unknown mystery to most.

Pfft, the internet was actually secretly funded by a global cooperative of the porn industry, starting with that 'community memory' project in ... dumdummdeedumm!!! California ... in the 70's.

Thinking that the world wide web is what really matters just shows that you don't know how to use the internet.

From a more professional point of view, more directed on today than the past, i would say, that Internet 2016 is practically Linux.

I would like to call this an international accomplishment, mainly a product of cooperation instead of competition.
It is really not suitable as subject of nationalistic debates about who invented what.
