"Parents and my various teaching positions" are very vague, but I suppose that if you as a child saw that your parents were ridiculed or were in severe struggle for trying to uphold their beliefs/values, you would definitely form a strong emotional attachment.
Or my parents helped me understand how racism is created.
"My religion" is kind of a misnomer. I'm a
progressive humanist.
Noone is surprised if the father who wasn't there for his son when he came out of the closet, which later lead to the suicide of his son, becomes a very passionate homosexuality proponent.
Noone is surprised if a person who beat his addiction but priorly ***** up his life and hurt his loved ones due to his addiction, becomes a person who is very passionate about helping people to beat their addictions.
Noone is surprised if a child who saw his parents jobs being "taken" by immigrants which later lead to major suffering for his family, becomes an anti-immigration proponent.
Noone is surprised if a child who saw his father, who happens to be a lawyer, abuse his mother, has difficulties to like or trust any lawyer in the future.
Humans are in general very emotional creatures. You are crusading for your ideas and thoughts in a forum where the absolute grand majority absolutely despises you. Only an extremely passionate person does that.
It is far easier to care about something that happens to you or your loved ones, than it is about something that happens to a stranger. Which is why passion in general comes from personal experiences.
There are plenty of people who like you were taught by their parents how racism is created. Yet, almost none of them is passionate enough to do what you do even if they have the opportunity. So there has to be far more to your story, or you simply have a psychological disorder.
