Sometimes, if someone knows you took something, they might say, "Who took these?" instead of confronting you directly. This gives you the chance to say, "Oh, sorry, that was me, but here is why I had to do it and this is how I'll fix it". This is generally considered more polite than confronting someone directly because that would be seen as an accusation and put you on the defensive whereas the other way, you get the chance to own up to what you did and show some honesty. However, you seem to have taken this as an opportunity to try to hide it until you were actually accused. Then you offered to replace the eggs. But if it happened the way you have said, it was already too late, you'd proven untrustworthy.
